The stylish Vertu has been browsing the Romanian mobile web for some time now. It has been on news sites, browsing soccer live scores, or maybe looking for paparazzi pictures of self.

We spotted it with MobileStats and draw some beyond the doubt conclusions:

  • It must speak Romanian since it visited m.hotnews.ro, realitatea.mobi and m.libertatea.ro (our possessions don’t necessarily reflect our taste)
  • It comes around and goes around with no particular pattern, meaning it’s usage is just for entertainment (the guy or gal doesn’t work in the online business, for that matter)
  • Without going into details, the phone has traveled some miles. Vertu makes its entrance from different parts of the world, unexpected, like any king of mobility should
  • Vertu understands the value of traffic. Never exceeded 10 minutes of browsing. Maybe a little pocket narrowed? :P

Personally, I am thrilled to see it come and go and can’t stop imagining what it’s searching, who’s going to call next or what hour did he rang the alarm this morning. Moreover, we love being the first ones to acknowledge its presence. Vertu makes an impression. Wherever it shows up, it must be noticed, and we too, noticed.

Thank you Modi for recommending us! :))) To get straight to the point, minute 6:50.

Hi people,

In case you’re using MobilePress WP plugin, you’ll need to do some adjustments to the detection script.

First, I want to thank Luca Passani for speaking at RoNewMedia. We at StarTech are members of the WURFL community for several years and we appreciate Luca’s efforts in managing this vibrant community.

What is StarTech? It’s the first .ro company that took mobile web seriously. That is.. the web for mobile phones. [Slide 2].

And this includes them all: starting from smartphones, pdas, iphones, androids, to older nokias, motorolas and so on. Even phones that are not “compatible” with Vodafone Live or Orange World.

So our challenge can be expressed like: your site on any mobile.

Let me start with a note to self (or lame excuse.. if you want):

“Do not ever again have pork canned in lard, fried and served with polenta and pickled cabbage the night before you have to give a speech. It just makes you dumber and continuously thirsty. Drinking several liters of water won’t help. And even if you manage to pay a visit to the restroom just before your speech should start, you will still lose focus.”

Nevermind. Here’s the story, the way I should have told it on the stage.

Well, it happened a while ago. After we got back from America we had to make a choice. Either backpacking to Indochina, programming c# on the way for smokes and booze, or settling down in Scandinavia and marrying some rich middle aged swedish chicks.

Yep.. that’s when it happened. I’m still not sure why, but we remained home and we suddenly started programming like crazy. I remember that once, back when I was employed, I had punched out the card after twenty hours.. And I didn’t Counter Strike! But this time, after twenty four hours of continuous typing, my brains were fine but my wrists were killing me!

So after countless sleepless nights, hectoliters of irish coffee and too much tobacco, we got a very powerful mobile web platform that we still use today. Although we haven’t done anything really spectacular since, we got some big local clients and we learned a lot.

Let’s see how we’ll manage from now on.
